Harvest Baskets are another style of Wedding Basket. They are traditionally used by an African Bride on her wedding day. On this day she will leave her family to go to the home of her new husband. As she walks she will place a harvest basket on her head so that her friends and relatives can place gifts of money in her basket. When she encounters one of her new in-laws she will stop and remain standing still until a gift is placed in the basket. Once she is satisfied with the gift she will continue walking toward her new home.
Similar to other Wedding baskets, these baskets are woven from the roots of the makenge bush. (Technically all wedding baskets are sewn rather than woven which is a much more complex technique). They are dyed with natural dyes and decorated with traditional motifs.
They are called Harvest baskets because they are used to collect grain and produce from the fields. They are also used to store seeds or herbs. It is common for a family to keep their most personal and valuable items in a Harvest basket. Women often use them to transport items on their head when they are traveling.
The baskets make beautiful table top decoration. Each basket is unique and will vary slightly in shape and size. No two are exactly alike.
