Wedding Baskets get their name because they are traditionally given to a newlywed African bride as a wedding gift. These baskets are woven from the roots of the makenge bush. Each basket takes over one month to weave and the quality of these baskets can only be attained by the most skillful and experienced weavers.

The baskets are colored with natural dyes made from boiling leaves. The fibers are dyed as the artist is weaving so that the color patterns are woven into rather than painted on the basket. Each basket has a pattern woven into it. These patterns can be interpreted into a message. These messages deal with themes of beauty, marriage, wedding, and family.

The weavers are women from the tiny Mbunda tribe of Zambia and Angola. The baskets are used to clean flour, to store grain and to serve food. They are very well made and sturdy. These baskets last for years longer than other baskets.

They can be displayed as wall art or used for tabletop. Each basket is unique and will vary slightly in size and shape. No two patterns are exactly alike.
